JUNE 2026 STAFF NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICER (SNCO) PROMOTIONS FOR  ACTIVE RESERVE (AR), SELECTED MARINE CORPS RESERVE (SMCR), AND  INDIVIDUAL READY RESERVE (IRR) AND JULY/AUGUST 2026 PLANNED SNCO  PROMOTIONS FOR AR, SMCR, AND IRR

MARADMIN 238/26 · May 28, 2026 · Source

Your name is on a promotion list. Here's when your pin-on date actually arrives.

A new MARADMIN just dropped the June 2026 SNCO promotion numbers for Reserve Marines.

It tells commanders exactly when to pin people, how many are getting promoted each month, and what can delay your date of rank even after you're selected.

If you're on a FY25 or FY26 SNCO list, this message is directly about you.

The old problem

Promotion lists get published. Then Marines wait.

The missing piece is usually clarity: How many people are going up this month? Where does my number fall? What happens if my contract isn't long enough?

This MARADMIN answers all three.

The new rule (in one line)

Commanders may begin promoting selected SNCOs on 1 June 2026, using this MARADMIN as their promotion authority.

The numbers: who's getting promoted and when

The tables below translate the raw figures from the message.

One thing to keep in mind before reading them: these are monthly slices out of a longer list. If your seniority number hasn't come up yet, you're not skipped. You're just queued.

FY25 SMCR Promotions

June 2026 promotions:

| Grade | Total Selected | Promoted thru May | Promoting in Jun | Last Senior # After Jun | |---|---|---|---|---| | SgtMaj / MGySgt | 48 | 32 | 4 | 36 | | 1stSgt / MSgt | 136 | 95 | 11 | 106 | | GySgt | 187 | 125 | 16 | 141 | | SSgt | 273 | 187 | 23 | 210 |

Projected July 2026:

✦ SgtMaj / MGySgt: 4 ✦ 1stSgt / MSgt: 11 ✦ GySgt: 15 ✦ SSgt: 21

Projected August 2026:

✦ SgtMaj / MGySgt: 4 ✦ 1stSgt / MSgt: 11 ✦ GySgt: 15 ✦ SSgt: 20

FY25 IRR Promotions

June 2026 promotions:

| Grade | Total Selected | Promoted thru May | Promoting in Jun | Last Senior # After Jun | |---|---|---|---|---| | MGySgt | No selections for this component | | | | | MSgt | 6 | 4 | 1 | 5 | | GySgt | 7 | List cleared | | | | SSgt | 36 | 25 | 3 | 28 |

Projected July 2026:

✦ MSgt: List cleared (no further promotions projected) ✦ GySgt: List cleared ✦ SSgt: 3

Projected August 2026:

✦ SSgt: 5 ✦ All other IRR grades: list cleared or no selections

FY26 Active Reserve (AR) Promotions

These are Marines on the newer FY26 list, not the FY25 list.

June 2026 promotions:

| Grade | Total Selected | Promoted thru May | Promoting in Jun | Last Senior # After Jun | |---|---|---|---|---| | MGySgt | 7 | 3 | None (TIG hold) | None | | MSgt | 26 | 6 | 3 | 9 | | GySgt | 69 | 12 | 6 | 18 | | SSgt | 140 | 40 | 20 | 60 |

Projected July 2026:

✦ MGySgt: 1 ✦ MSgt: 3 ✦ GySgt: 6 ✦ SSgt: 20

Projected August 2026:

✦ MGySgt: None (still TIG-restricted) ✦ MSgt: 3 ✦ GySgt: 6 ✦ SSgt: 20

(The FY25 AR lists show zero promotions across all SNCO grades for June through August 2026. That list is effectively done.)

Two things that can push your date of rank back

Being selected is not the same as being promoted on schedule.

Two requirements can delay your actual pin-on date even after your seniority number comes up.

1. Contract length

You must have an Expiration of Active Service or Reserve Contract date of 31 May 2028 or later.

If your contract expires before that date, you cannot be promoted until you extend or re-enlist.

Your date of rank will be set to the 1st of the month after you fix the contract. Not backdated to when your number was reached.

2. Obligated Service (OBS)

Same logic applies. If you haven't met your OBS requirement by the time your seniority number comes up, your promotion waits.

Again: date of rank moves to the 1st of the following month after compliance.

(This is not a punishment. It's a sequencing rule. But it costs you time-in-grade if you let it slide.)

Why this is a big deal

Promotion projections are rare clarity in a system that usually feels opaque.

Reserve SNCOs often don't know where they stand in the queue. This MARADMIN gives you the actual numbers. You can look at your seniority number, compare it to the "last senior number promoted" column, and do the math yourself.

More importantly, it makes the contract and OBS requirements visible before they become a problem.

Missing a promotion month because your contract was 30 days short is the kind of thing that shouldn't happen. This message gives you enough runway to fix it before your number comes up.

A smaller note for active-duty Marines

This MARADMIN is Reserve-only. Paragraph 6 makes that explicit.

Active-duty SNCO promotions are governed by separate messages. If you're AR (Active Reserve), your numbers are in section 4.d and 4.e above.

The bottom line

June 2026 SNCO promotions for SMCR, IRR, and AR Marines are authorized starting 1 June 2026.

Check your seniority number against the tables. Check your contract expiration. Check your OBS status. Do it now, not when your number is already up.

What to do with this

If you're on the FY25 or FY26 SNCO list:

✦ Find your seniority number ✦ Compare it to the "last senior number promoted" column for your grade and component ✦ Verify your contract runs through at least 31 May 2028 ✦ Confirm your OBS is clear ✦ Contact your S-1 if anything looks off

If you're a commander or S-1:

✦ Promotion authority is effective 1 June 2026, not before ✦ Cite MARADMIN 238/26 as your promotion authority ✦ Verify each Marine's contract and OBS before initiating ✦ For allocation questions, contact RAP-2 at HQMC

If you have questions about your specific situation:

✦ Contact Maj William C. Griffin, MMPB-11: william.c.griffin@usmc.mil / 703-784-3440 ✦ Contact MSgt Dathan T. Mills, MMPB-11: dathan.mills@usmc.mil / 703-784-2765 ✦ For Reserve-specific questions: MSgt Joel S. Austin, RAP-2: joel.austin@usmc.mil / 703-784-9879

This is written by a reservist, for reservists. It is not an official publication of HQMC or MARFORRES. Always verify guidance with your command or unit S-1 before acting on any article or summary.

Need a shorter version of this? A one-paragraph summary exists. Need a deeper breakdown of OBS rules or how to request a promotion backdate? That can go longer. Let me know what's useful.
