1STLT PROMOTIONS FOR JUNE 2026
MARADMIN 236/26 · May 28, 2026 · Source
Your promotion to 1stLt is official. Here's what you need to know.
MARADMIN 236/26 just published the June 2026 promotion list for Second Lieutenants moving up to First Lieutenant. If your name is on it, this message is the legal authority your commanding officer needs to pin on your new rank.
No waiting for a certificate in the mail. The ceremony can happen now.
Reference: MARADMIN 236/26, signed 27 May 2026. Underlying authorities include Title 10 U.S.C., MCO 1400.31D (Marine Corps Promotion Manual, Vol. 1), and SECNAVINST 1412.6M.
The old problem
Promotions have always had a paperwork lag. The physical commission certificate takes 4 to 6 weeks to arrive at your parent command. That delay used to create confusion about whether a ceremony could happen before the paper showed up.
It can. The certificate is never the legal trigger.
The new rule (in one line)
Appearance on this MARADMIN is the only authority required to promote. The commission that arrives later is ceremonial, not legal.
The Reserve promotions (Section 3)
This is the part that applies directly to you if you are SMCR, IMA, or IRR.
Four Reserve officers are promoted to 1stLt under this message:
| Name | Date of Rank | MCC | |---|---|---| | Peter J. Cannella | 03 Jun 26 | SK5 | | Jesus Mosqueda | 13 Jun 26 | SQA | | Dustan R. Jones | 22 Jun 26 | S11 | | Dawn E. Parry | 28 Jun 26 | S26 |
Your rank, pay, and allowances are effective from the date of rank listed above. Not from when the certificate arrives. Not from when the ceremony happens.
(Your MCC code tells you which unit or program you are assigned to. If you are unsure what yours means, your S-1 can decode it.)
How promotion works once your name is on the list
- Your commanding officer reviews whether you are mentally, physically, morally, and professionally qualified.
- If you are qualified and no hold exists, your CO effects the promotion on or after your date of rank.
- Your command notifies you and directs you to begin wearing the 1stLt insignia.
- At that moment, you are considered to have accepted the promotion.
- A physical commission will arrive separately in 4 to 6 weeks. It is not required to begin the above steps.
For Reserve officers specifically: you must also meet the physical examination requirement under Title 10 U.S.C. Section 10206. If that exam has not been completed, your promotion can be delayed. Confirm with your S-1 now if there is any question.
How to decline (and why you almost certainly will not)
You have the right to decline a promotion. But the window is narrow.
✦ You must submit a written letter of declination to CMC (MMPB-10).
✦ You must do it at the moment your command notifies you and directs you to wear the new insignia.
✦ Any action or statement that signals acceptance permanently waives your right to decline.
(There is no "I will think about it." The moment you put on the bar, the decision is made.)
Delay of promotion: what can stop it
Two things can cause a promotion to be delayed or withheld:
1. Commanding Officer determination. If your CO determines you are not qualified. mentally, physically, morally, or professionally. they must notify you in writing before your effective date, and notify CMC (MMPB-10) before that date as well so the promotion is not recorded in MCTFS prematurely.
2. Adverse screening. Before this MARADMIN was released, every name was screened for adverse or potentially adverse information. Officers flagged during that process were removed from this list. They will receive separate correspondence from CMC (JPL).
If your name was removed and you believe it is in error, contact your command and the Officer Promotions desk directly.
Retirement and transfers: one thing to know
If you are considering voluntary retirement around this promotion, review the separation and retirement manual for any service obligation that accepting the promotion creates.
Also worth knowing: a selection for promotion carries over if you move between components. Active Reserve to SMCR or IRR. SMCR or IRR to active component via augmentation. The selection follows you.
Why this matters for Reservists
Reserve promotions often get lost in the noise of active-duty MARADMIN traffic. This one is yours.
If you are one of the four names in Section 3, your promotion to 1stLt is legally authorized right now. Your pay changes on your date of rank. Your ceremony does not need to wait for a certificate. And your CO has everything they need to act.
Do not let administrative lag cost you a single day of 1stLt pay.
A smaller note for active-duty Marines
Section 2 of this MARADMIN lists 55 active-duty officers promoted to 1stLt in June 2026. The same rules apply: this message is the authority, the commission follows in 4 to 6 weeks, and promotion is considered accepted the moment you are directed to wear the new insignia.
The bottom line
Four Reserve officers are promoted to 1stLt effective June 2026. The MARADMIN is the legal authority. The commission certificate is not required. Pay and allowances run from the date of rank. Declining is possible but the window closes fast.
What to do with this
If your name is on the list:
✦ Confirm your physical exam (Section 10206) is complete. Contact your S-1 immediately if it is not.
✦ Coordinate your promotion ceremony with your CO. Sample commissions and the oath of office are at www.Marines.mil under Marines / Career / Promotions / Officer Promotions / Reference tab.
✦ Verify your pay update in your next LES. If it does not reflect your new grade on or after your date of rank, contact your S-1.
✦ If you are considering declining, contact CMC (MMPB-10) before your command formally notifies you. Once you are directed to put on the bar, the window is closed.
If you are a commanding officer or S-1:
✦ Pull the list, identify any officers in your command, and begin the qualification review now.
✦ If a delay is warranted, notify the officer in writing and notify CMC (MMPB-10) before the effective date.
✦ Do not wait for the physical commission to arrive before effecting the promotion.
