Impact 2 — Action Required

MANDATORY COMPLETION OF THE BASIC ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE  COURSE

MARADMIN 214/26 · May 8, 2026 · Source

The Marine Corps just made AI training mandatory. Here's what Reserve Marines need to know.

A new MARADMIN dropped in May 2026. It applies to every Marine. Active duty and Reserve. Officer and enlisted.

The requirement is simple: complete one online AI course before the end of 2026.

Here's everything you need to know to get it done.

Reference: MARADMIN 214/26, signed 7 May 2026. Issued by CG TECOM.

The old problem

AI is everywhere. The Corps has been watching it change warfare, logistics, and decision-making in real time.

But most Marines have had no formal introduction to it. No common baseline. No shared vocabulary.

Some units have leaned in. Others have ignored it entirely. That inconsistency is the gap this MARADMIN is closing.

The new rule (in one line)

Every Marine. One AI course. Done by 31 December 2026.

What the course actually is

This is not a technical deep dive. It is not coding. It is not a career-long commitment.

It is a 45-minute online course designed to give you a working understanding of what AI is, how it is being used in military operations, and how to think about it responsibly.

The course covers:

✦ Key AI concepts in plain language

✦ Practical applications and real-world use cases

✦ How AI supports decision-making and mission effectiveness

✦ Ethical and risk-aware use of AI tools

The goal is awareness, not expertise.

(Yes, it is literally 45 minutes.)

How to complete it

  1. Go to the Marine Corps eLearning environment (MCELE) at www.mcele.usmc.mil
  2. Search for course code CDETBAIC01
  3. Log in with your CAC or your MCELE username and password
  4. Complete the course
  5. Your completion gets recorded automatically in MCTFS and shows on your BTR in MOL

That's it.

A few things worth knowing before you start

You can do this from your phone.

The course runs on any device. Personal laptop, tablet, smartphone. You do not need a government computer to complete the main training.

One note: some links inside the course point to GenAI.mil, which does require a CAC-enabled government computer. If you are on a personal device, you can substitute any commercially available AI tool (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc.) for those hands-on portions.

This is a one-time requirement.

Not annual. Not recurring. Do it once and it is done.

If you join after this MARADMIN was published:

You have 12 months from the completion of your entry-level training to finish the course.

Why this is a big deal

The Corps is not asking you to become an AI engineer.

It is asking you to stop being AI-illiterate.

The formal position is that AI is the most consequential emerging technology the force is dealing with right now. Adversaries are not waiting. The question is not whether AI will shape the next fight. The question is whether Marines will be ready to use it, critique it, and lead through it.

This course is the floor. The minimum. The starting point for a larger framework.

Intermediate and advanced AI courses are already in development. They are expected to drop in FY27.

Getting this baseline done now puts you ahead of that curve.

A smaller note for active-duty Marines

This applies to you too, same deadline: 31 December 2026. The course, the login process, and the completion tracking are identical. If your unit is building a training plan around this, the course code is CDETBAIC01 on MCELE.

The bottom line

One course. 45 minutes. Any device. Done before New Year's Day 2027.

It is one of the lowest-lift mandatory training requirements the Corps has issued in a long time. The window is long. The course is short. There is no good reason to wait until December.

What to do with this

If you are a Reserve Marine in the SMCR or IMA:

✦ Log into MCELE now and find CDETBAIC01

✦ Knock it out before your next drill weekend so you can say it is done

✦ Check your BTR in MOL afterward to confirm it recorded

If you are an IRR Marine:

✦ Same steps. You still fall under this requirement.

✦ MCELE access does not require you to be drilling. You can do this any time.

If you are a unit S-1, training officer, or senior NCO:

✦ This will show on BTRs in MOL. Build it into your tracking now.

✦ Deadline is 31 December 2026. That is long enough to plan around it. Start nudging your Marines now rather than chasing completions in November.

✦ Questions about course content go to Maj Sean Morrow at sean.p.morrow@usmc.mil or Ryan Bair at ryan.bair@usmcu.edu.

This is written by a reservist, for reservists. It is not an official publication of HQMC or MARFORRES. Always verify guidance with your command or unit S-1 before acting on any article or summary.
