MAY 2026 STAFF NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICER (SNCO) PROMOTIONS FOR  ACTIVE RESERVE (AR), SELECTED MARINE CORPS RESERVE (SMCR), AND  INDIVIDUAL READY RESERVE (IRR) AND JUNE/JULY 2026 PLANNED SNCO  PROMOTIONS FOR AR, SMCR, AND IRR

MARADMIN 204/26 · May 1, 2026 · Source

Your promotion number just got called. Do you know where you stand?

The Marine Corps just published the May 2026 SNCO promotion list for Reserve and Active Reserve Marines.

If you're on a FY25 or FY26 promotion list, this is the message that tells you who's getting pinned this month, who's next, and what could delay your promotion even after your number comes up.

Read this before your drill weekend.

Reference: MARADMIN 204/26, signed 30 April 2026. Underlying authority: MCO P1400.32D w/CH 2, the Enlisted Promotion Manual.

The old problem

Monthly promotion MARADMINs are written in table format with military jargon and reference chains.

If you've never read one before, it's easy to miss your number, misread the notes, or not realize that a contract gap could push your date of rank back by a full month.

The new rule (in one line)

Effective 1 May 2026, commanders are authorized to promote selected SNCOs per this MARADMIN. Not before. Starting now.

What the numbers actually say

Here's the promotion picture broken out by component for May 2026, with June and July projections included.

SMCR (Selected Marine Corps Reserve) — FY25 List

| Grade | Selected | Promoted thru Apr | Promoting in May | Running Total | Projected Jun | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | SgtMaj / MGySgt | 48 | 28 | 4 | 32 | 4 | | 1stSgt / MSgt | 126 | 85 | 10 | 95 | 11 | | GySgt | 187 | 110 | 15 | 125 | 16 | | SSgt | 273 | 164 | 23 | 187 | 23 |

IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) — FY25 List

| Grade | Selected | Notes | |---|---|---| | MGySgt | No selections | No IRR MGySgt selections this cycle | | MSgt | 6 | 0 in May, running total 4, projected 1 in Jun | | GySgt | 7 | List cleared | | SSgt | 36 | 3 in May, running total 25, projected 3 in Jun |

(The IRR MSgt and GySgt notes are a little thin in the source. If you're an IRR MSgt or GySgt, contact RAP-2 directly for your status.)

Active Reserve (AR) — FY26 List

| Grade | Selected | Promoted thru Apr | Promoting in May | Running Total | Projected Jun | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | MGySgt | 7 | 2 | 1 | 3 | No promotions, TIG requirements | | MSgt | 26 | 3 | 3 | 6 | 3 | | GySgt | 69 | 6 | 6 | 12 | 6 | | SSgt | 140 | 20 | 20 | 40 | 20 |

July 2026 Projections

SMCR: 4 SgtMaj/MGySgt, 11 1stSgt/MSgt, 15 GySgt, 21 SSgt. AR: 1 SgtMaj/MGySgt, 3 MSgt, 6 GySgt, 20 SSgt. IRR: 3 SSgt only.

The thing that can delay your promotion even when your number is up

This is the part most Marines miss.

Your contract has to run at least through 30 April 2028 for you to be promoted.

If your Expiration of Current Contract (ECC) or Expiration of Active Service (EAS) falls before that date, your commander cannot promote you. Full stop.

If you fix the contract gap after your seniority number has already been passed, your date of rank and effective date will be pushed to the first of the month after you comply. That means a delay in pay and seniority.

One more thing on projections:

✦ Projected numbers are estimates, not guarantees. ✦ Some months require an additional extension before promotion can happen. ✦ Never assume June or July is locked in just because it appears in the table.

Why this is a big deal

Reserve SNCO promotions run on seniority numbers, and those numbers move every month.

If you're not tracking where your number sits relative to the "senior number promoted" column, you might not realize your promotion month is approaching, and then miss a contract requirement, PME gate, or commander certification that could slide your date of rank.

This MARADMIN is not just an announcement. It's a checklist prompt.

Your number is moving whether or not you're paying attention.

A smaller note for active-duty Marines

Paragraph 6 of the MARADMIN states explicitly: this message applies to the Marine Corps Reserve only. The AR (Active Reserve) component is included because those are Reserve billets on active orders. If you're a full active-duty SNCO, your promotion authority comes from a separate message.

The bottom line

SMCR, IRR, and AR SNCOs on the FY25 and FY26 promotion lists have promotions executing in May 2026, with more coming in June and July. Your contract must extend to at least 30 April 2028 or your promotion stops until you fix it, at which point you lose a month of seniority.

Know your number. Check your contract. Talk to your S-1 now, not after drill.

What to do with this

If you are on the SMCR FY25 list:

  1. Find your seniority number on the list.
  2. Compare it to the "Senior No. Prom Apr 26" column for your grade.
  3. If your number falls within the May promotion block, confirm your contract runs past 30 April 2028 immediately.
  4. Contact your unit S-1 to verify your promotion package is complete.

If you are on the IRR list:

  1. Check which grade and note applies to you.
  2. If your grade shows "list cleared" or "no selections," no action needed for now.
  3. If you are an IRR SSgt, 3 are promoting in May. Confirm your eligibility with RAP-2.

If you are on the AR FY26 list:

  1. Same drill. Find your number, check the table, verify your contract.
  2. MGySgts: no June promotions due to TIG requirements. Plan accordingly.

For all components: ✦ Verify your contract end date with your S-1 before your promotion month arrives. ✦ Confirm all PME requirements are complete. The Enlisted Promotions website has the full checklist at manpower.marines.mil under Divisions / Manpower Management / Performance Branch / Promotion Section / Enlisted Promotions / SNCOs / Monthly Promotion Requirements. ✦ For Reserve-specific allocation questions, contact RAP-2 directly. MSgt Joel Austin: joel.austin@usmc.mil, (703) 784-9879. ✦ For general promotion questions, contact Maj William Griffin or MSgt Dathan Mills at MMPB-11.
