FY 2026 RESERVE (SMCR-IMA-IRR) STAFF NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICER  (SNCO) PROMOTION SELECTION BOARD

MARADMIN 180/26 · April 23, 2026 · Source

Did Your Reserve Promotion Board Just Get a Deadline You're Missing?

The FY 2026 Reserve SNCO Promotion Selection Board has a convening date, a hard cut-off for correspondence, and PME requirements that can knock you out of the running before the board ever sees your name.

If you're a Reserve Sergeant through Master Sergeant, this is about you.

Read it now. Act before June 27.

Reference: MARADMIN 180/26, signed 20 April 2026. Governs the FY 2026 Reserve (SMCR/IMA/IRR) SNCO Promotion Selection Board.

The old problem

Reserve promotion boards have always had moving parts that trip Marines up.

Contract expiration dates sneak up. PME courses get pushed to the last minute. Marines miss the correspondence window because they didn't know it existed.

The result: good Marines get administratively dropped from consideration, not because they weren't qualified, but because they missed a procedural requirement.

This MARADMIN lays out exactly what's required, and when, so you can't say you didn't know.

The new rule (in one line)

The FY 2026 Reserve SNCO board convenes 8 July 2026, and if your PME isn't done, your contract isn't extended past September 30, or your component change happens after July 7, you won't be considered.

What you need to know

The board basics

✦ Board convenes: Tuesday, 8 July 2026 ✦ Location: Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA ✦ Duration: approximately 7 weeks ✦ Who is eligible: Reserve E-5 through E-8 (SMCR, IMA, and IRR) ✦ All correspondence to the Board President must arrive by: 2359 EST on 27 June 2026

That June 27 deadline is firm. Miss it and your letter doesn't exist.

PME requirements

This is where Marines get knocked out most often.

If you're a Sergeant competing for Staff Sergeant:

  1. You must complete the MarineNet EPME5000BA Course before the board convenes on July 8. No exceptions. Fail to complete it and you are ineligible. You receive a failure of selection.

  2. Completing additional courses makes you higher qualified than Marines who only finished MarineNet. Those courses are:

✦ Resident Sergeants Course (T4M) ✦ Sergeants Course Seminar (315) ✦ Reserve Sergeants Course (CFF)

(Higher qualified matters. Boards rank-order Marines. Being higher qualified is a real competitive advantage.)

If you're in one of these recruiting or training billets:

Marines currently serving in, or reassigned within the past 365 days from, BMOS 8411, 8421, 8156, 0913, 8152, 8154, or 0911, including those at Officer Candidate School in Quantico or Newport, are only required to complete the MarineNet course.

If you're a Gunnery Sergeant or above:

You must complete the PME required for the grade you are being considered for. Not your current grade. The next one. It must be done before July 8.

Obligated service and your contract

This one catches people off guard.

If your Reserve End of Current Contract (RECC) date falls before 30 September 2026, you will be automatically deleted from the board. No waiver. No appeal. Just gone.

Here is what to do about it:

  1. Check your RECC date now.
  2. If it falls before September 30, 2026, submit a reenlistment or extension request immediately.
  3. Cite MARADMIN 180/26 as the authority to locally extend your contract.

You are authorized to do this right now. Do not wait for your unit to bring it up.

(Bonus reason: if you get selected, you may receive orders. Being reenlisted before the board helps you actually execute those orders.)

Component and category lock date

Whatever category you are in at 2359 EST on 7 July 2026 is how the board sees you.

If you switch between active component, SMCR, IMA, or IRR after that date, it does not change your eligibility. The board goes off the snapshot taken at that deadline.

Make sure your records reflect where you actually are before July 7.

MOS feeder structure

The board considers Marines in their Intended MOS (IMOS) at the next higher grade.

What that means in plain English: your current MOS may "feed into" a different MOS for promotion purposes. You compete for promotion in that IMOS, not necessarily the MOS on your current orders.

The MARADMIN includes the full feeder MOS tables for every grade level:

✦ Sergeant to Staff Sergeant ✦ Staff Sergeant to Gunnery Sergeant ✦ Gunnery Sergeant to Master Sergeant ✦ Master Sergeant to Master Gunnery Sergeant ✦ First Sergeant to Sergeant Major

Check the full MARADMIN to confirm where your PMOS feeds. If you're unsure, ask your S-1 before July 7.

Where to find more detail

The Enlisted Promotions (MMPB-11) website has complete guidance on:

✦ Marine and commander responsibilities ✦ Board eligibility rules ✦ How to update MCTFS and your OMPF ✦ Removal from consideration ✦ Alternate selection procedures

To find it: go to manpower.marines.mil, then navigate to Division, Manpower Management, Performance Branch, Promotion Section, Enlisted, Enlisted Promotions, SNCOs, and Preparation.

Why this is a big deal

Reserve promotion boards are not forgiving.

Unlike active-duty, Reserve Marines often don't have an S-1 or admin shop watching their records daily. Contracts lapse quietly. PME completion doesn't auto-update. Component categories change and nobody flags it.

This board has three hard gates:

  1. PME complete before July 8.
  2. Contract extending past September 30.
  3. Category locked as of July 7.

Miss any one of them and you're not getting a waiver. You're just out for this cycle.

The system won't always catch these issues for you. You have to be the one to check.

A smaller note for active-duty Marines

This board is specifically for Reserve (SMCR, IMA, IRR) SNCOs. Active-duty Marines have separate boards and timelines. If you are a recruiter or OCS instructor currently coded in one of the listed BMOS categories and you are affiliated with the Reserve component, the modified PME requirement in paragraph 5.c. may apply to you. Confirm with your S-1.

The bottom line

The FY 2026 Reserve SNCO board convenes July 8. You have three things to handle before then. Your PME, your contract, and your category. All three have earlier internal deadlines than the board date. Start now.

What to do with this

If you are a Sergeant competing for Staff Sergeant:

  1. Log into MarineNet and confirm EPME5000BA is completed and recorded.
  2. If you have time, complete a resident or seminar Sergeants Course for higher qualified status.
  3. Confirm your RECC date with your S-1.

If you are a Staff Sergeant through Master Sergeant:

  1. Confirm your PME for the next grade is complete and recorded in your OMPF.
  2. Check your RECC date. If it expires before September 30, 2026, submit your extension request now and cite MARADMIN 180/26.
  3. Confirm your MOS feeder in the MARADMIN tables.
  4. If you want to submit correspondence to the board, it must arrive by 2359 EST on 27 June 2026.

If you are a commander or S-1:

  1. Pull your unit's eligible Marines now.
  2. Check RECC dates against the September 30 cutoff. Locally extend where needed, citing this MARADMIN.
  3. Verify PME completion is recorded in MCTFS before July 8.
  4. Confirm component categories are accurate before 2359 EST on July 7.
