Impact 2 — Action Required

CHANGE 1 TO THE FY26 STAFF SERGEANT PROMOTION SELECTION BOARD

The FY26 SSgt Board Just Changed. Here's What Actually Shifted.

A mid-cycle update dropped on the promotion zones and seat counts for this year's Staff Sergeant board. If your MOS is on the list, your eligibility window may have moved.

Reference: MARADMIN 087/26, signed 04 March 2026. Amends MARADMIN 051/26, the original FY26 SSgt board announcement.

(The original message set the rules. This one revises the numbers.)

The old problem

The original FY26 SSgt board message published in February set zones, allocations, and AFADBD cutoffs for each MOS.

Those numbers were projections.

Projections change.

The new rule, in one line

HQMC updated the promotion seat counts, date-of-rank zone boundaries, and AFADBD cutoffs for a large number of MOSs mid-cycle, before the board convenes.

What actually changed

Two things were revised for affected MOSs:

1. Allocations (the number of promotion seats)

Each MOS got a specific number of Staff Sergeant slots the board can fill. Some went up. Some went down. A few stayed the same.

2. Zone cutoff dates (DOR and AFADBD)

Each MOS has three zones:

✦ Above Zone. Sergeants who are senior enough that they are past the primary window. Last realistic shot.

✦ Promotion Zone. The main group the board is looking at. Your DOR puts you here.

✦ Below Zone. Too junior to be expected to select, but still eligible. Early look only.

For each zone, the board uses two dates:

✦ Junior Date of Rank (JR DOR). The most junior DOR the board will consider in that zone.

✦ Active Federal Active Duty Base Date (AFADBD). A secondary cutoff, used in some MOSs to further define the eligible population. Listed as "NA" when not applicable.

If your DOR is on or before the JR DOR listed for your MOS and zone, you are in that zone.

If your DOR is after the JR DOR, you are not.

3. Closed MOSs

The following MOSs remain closed to promotion. No seats, no board consideration:

✦ 1316 ✦ 6222 ✦ 6227

Why this is a big deal

Promotion boards run on these numbers.

If HQMC had left the original cutoffs in place, some Marines would have been in the wrong zone, or included when they should not have been, or excluded when they should.

Mid-cycle corrections like this one are how the system self-corrects before the board actually sits and makes decisions.

If your MOS is on the list and your DOR is near a boundary, this update may have moved you in or out of a zone compared to what the February message said.

That matters.

A note for Reserve Marines

Paragraph 3 of this MARADMIN states explicitly: this message does not apply to the Marine Corps Reserve.

Full stop.

If you are SMCR, IMA, or IRR and you are a Sergeant competitive for Staff Sergeant, the Reserve SSgt board runs on a separate track with its own message, zones, and allocations.

Watch for a Reserve-specific MARADMIN. This is not it.

If you are unsure whether a board message applies to you, ask your unit S-1 or your MARFORRES G-1 chain before assuming anything either way.

The bottom line

HQMC revised the seat counts and zone cutoff dates for the FY26 active-duty SSgt board.

All other rules from the original February board message remain in effect.

This message does not apply to Reserve Marines.

What to do with this

If you are an active-duty Sergeant:

  1. Find your MOS in the table.
  2. Check your DOR against the JR DOR for each zone.
  3. Confirm whether you moved zones compared to the February message.
  4. If you are near a boundary or have questions, talk to your S-1 now, before the board convenes.

If you are a Reserve Sergeant (SMCR, IMA, IRR):

  1. Note that this message does not apply to you.
  2. Watch for the Reserve-specific SSgt board MARADMIN.
  3. If you have not seen one yet, ask your unit S-1 or contact your MARFORRES G-1 support element.

If you are a unit S-1 or career planner:

  1. Pull the updated table and compare it against your February tracking sheet.
  2. Identify any Marines whose zone status changed.
  3. Notify them. Do not wait for them to find this on their own.

This is written by a reservist, for reservists. It is not an official publication of HQMC or MARFORRES. Always verify guidance with your command or unit S-1 before acting on any article or summary.
