Are You Eligible for the FY26 Staff Sergeant Board?
The Marine Corps just published the details for the FY26 Staff Sergeant Promotion Selection Board.
If you're a Sergeant, this message is for you. It covers the board date, PME requirements, service obligations, and what you need to do before the board convenes.
Read this before April 7.

The old problem
PME requirements for SSgt boards have caused confusion for years.
Reserve Marines especially got caught in gray areas. Which courses count? Does the resident course matter if you did the online version? What if your EAS is coming up right before the board?
This MARADMIN spells it out clearly, so there is less room for "I didn't know."
The new rule (in one line)
You must complete at least the MCeLE EPME5000 course before April 7, 2026, or you are ineligible and incur a failure of selection.
The board basics
The FY26 SSgt Promotion Selection Board convenes on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Building 2008, Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA.
It runs for approximately eight weeks.
All Sergeants in the eligible zones will be considered.
PME requirements
This is the part that matters most. There are two tiers.
Tier 1. Minimum qualifying (MCeLE only)
✦ Complete the MCeLE EPME5000 course before April 7, 2026.
✦ This makes you eligible. That's it. You're in the game.
✦ If you do not complete it before the board convenes, you are ineligible. You receive a failure of selection. No exceptions listed.
Tier 2. Higher qualified (resident or seminar courses)
Completing any of these puts you above Marines who only completed MCeLE:
- Resident Sergeants Course (T4M)
- Sergeants Course Seminar (315)
- Reserve Sergeants Course (CFF), if you were previously attached to the SMCR
(That third one is specifically for Reserve Marines. If you completed the Reserve Sergeants Course while in the SMCR, you are higher qualified.)
Special exception for certain billets
If you are currently serving in, or were reassigned from, a BMOS of 8411, 8421, 8156, 0913, 8152, 8154, or 0911, including duty at OCS Quantico or Newport, RI in an 0911 billet in a permanent capacity within the past 365 days, you only need the MCeLE course. The resident course is not required.
Service obligation requirements
Two separate obligation rules apply. Both matter.
Rule 1. EAS at board convening
If your End of Active Service date falls before July 12, 2026, and you do not extend, you will be administratively removed from consideration. You will incur a failure of selection.
You can act now. This MARADMIN authorizes you to submit a reenlistment or extension request at the local level to push your EAS past that cutoff. Cite MARADMIN 051/26 as authority.
(Yes, your command can act on this now. Do not wait.)
Rule 2. Obligation after selection
If you are selected, you must have at least 24 months of obligated service remaining from the date you are promoted.
Selection without sufficient service means you cannot actually be promoted.
Accelerated promotion
If you were recommended for accelerated promotion on a fitness report with a period ending between April 16, 2025 and April 7, 2026, you will be considered in the below-zone pool with your MOS peers.
This only works if the fitness report reaches MMPB-23 within 30 days of the report's end date.
Late fitreps mean this benefit disappears.
Letters to the board president
You are allowed to send personal correspondence directly to the board president.
Hard deadline: 2359 Eastern Time, March 27, 2026.
Anything received after that will not be submitted to the board. No exceptions listed.
Submit to the email address in paragraph 10.a. of the original MARADMIN. For the direct POC contacts: Maj William C. Griffin at william.c.griffin@usmc.mil or MSgt Dathan T. Mills at dathan.mills@usmc.mil.
MOS feeder structure and zones
The MARADMIN includes a full table showing which Sergeant MOS feeds into which Intended MOS (IMOS) at the SSgt level.
It also lists the tentative allocations, promotion zones, date of rank cutoffs, and AFADBD requirements by IMOS.
Rather than reproduce the full table here, go directly to the Enlisted Promotions website to find your MOS:
manpower.marines.mil, then: Divisions, Manpower Management, Performance Branch, Promotion Section, Enlisted Promotions, SNCOs, Preparation.
Your S-1 can also pull your zone eligibility from MCTFS.
Why this is a big deal
For Reserve Marines, the PME tier system is the key shift to understand.
The MCeLE course sets the floor. But completing it only makes you eligible. If you are competing against Marines who completed the resident or seminar courses, and you only have MCeLE, you are in a lower competitive tier.
The Reserve Sergeants Course (CFF) counts as higher qualified. If you completed it while in the SMCR and it is documented in your OMPF, that matters.
The EAS rule also hits Reserve Marines differently. If you are on a short contract or approaching your EAS in early-to-mid 2026, you need to act immediately. The window to extend is open right now.
Waiting costs you a selection opportunity.
A smaller note for active-duty Marines
Everything above applies to active component Sergeants as well. The PME tiers, EAS cutoff, 24-month post-promotion obligation, and letter deadline are the same. Check your OMPF now at O-RMA and confirm your PME completion is documented before April 7.
The bottom line
The FY26 SSgt board convenes April 7, 2026.
Complete MCeLE EPME5000 before that date or you cannot be considered. Higher courses make you more competitive. Fix your EAS now if it falls before July 12. Make sure your OMPF is clean. Submit any letters to the board by March 27.
What to do with this
If you are a Sergeant in the eligible zone:
- Log into MCeLE and confirm EPME5000 is complete and documented. Do this today.
- Pull your OMPF in O-RMA and verify your PME entries, fitreps, and basic service data are correct.
- Check your EAS. If it falls before July 12, 2026, talk to your S-1 about extending now.
- Check your MOS in the feeder table and confirm your zone eligibility. Use the Enlisted Promotions website or ask your S-1.
- If you want to write a letter to the board, submit it before March 27, 2026 at 2359 Eastern.
If you are an SNCO or officer supervising eligible Sergeants:
- Identify every Sgt in your unit who is board-eligible.
- Verify their MCeLE completion now. Do not wait until March.
- Flag anyone with an EAS before July 12 and get their extension paperwork moving.
- Ensure fitreps with accelerated promotion recommendations are submitted on time to MMPB-23.
If you are a unit S-1:
- Run a report of board-eligible Sergeants and cross-check their PME completion in MCTFS.
- Identify any Marines with an EAS before July 12 and initiate extension action using MARADMIN 051/26 as authority.
- Brief commanding officers on the two-tier PME system and the 24-month post-promotion obligation rule.
This is written by a reservist, for reservists. It is not an official publication of HQMC or MARFORRES. Always verify guidance with your command or unit S-1 before acting on any article or summary.
Need a shorter version of this for a drill weekend brief or a longer breakdown of the MOS zone tables? Both are available on request.
