Are You on the February 2026 SNCO Promotion List?

A new MARADMIN dropped at the end of January.

It covers SNCO promotions for February 2026, plus projected numbers through April.

If you're a Staff Sergeant through Master Gunnery Sergeant in the Reserve, this one is for you.

Reference: MARADMIN 031/26, signed 28 January 2026. Underlying authority is MCO P1400.32D w/CH 2, the Enlisted Promotion Manual.

The old problem

Promotion lists move on a rolling basis.

Not everyone selected gets promoted in the same month.

And if your contract isn't long enough, or your PME isn't done, your promotion can be delayed or denied entirely.

The confusion usually hits when a Marine assumes "selected" means "promoted now." It doesn't.

The new rule (in one line)

Commanders may begin promoting selected Reserve SNCOs on 1 February 2026, but only those who meet obligated service and other requirements by the time their seniority number comes up.

The numbers: who promotes when

Here's where each component stands.

SMCR (Selected Marine Corps Reserve)

These are the FY 2025 list numbers. February promotions are listed, with March projections alongside.

| Grade | Total Selected | Promoted thru Jan | Promoting Feb | Promoting Mar (projected) | |---|---|---|---|---| | SgtMaj / MGySgt | 48 | 16 | 4 | 4 | | 1stSgt / MSgt | 126 | 50 | 10 | 11 | | GySgt | 187 | 64 | 15 | 15 | | SSgt | 273 | 92 | 23 | 23 |

IRR (Individual Ready Reserve)

| Grade | Total Selected | Promoted thru Jan | Promoting Feb | Promoting Mar (projected) | |---|---|---|---|---| | MGySgt | No selections | — | — | — | | MSgt | 6 | No promotions yet | No promotions yet | No promotions yet | | GySgt | 7 | 4 | 1 | 1 | | SSgt | 36 | 10 | 3 | 3 |

(MSgt IRR promotions are on hold due to time-in-grade requirements. Not a mistake. Not a slight. Just the rules.)

FY 2026 April 2026 projections (Reserve only)

| Grade | SMCR | IRR | |---|---|---| | SgtMaj / MGySgt | 4 | No selections | | 1stSgt / MSgt | 10 | 1 | | GySgt | 15 | 1 | | SSgt | 23 | 3 |

(AR lists for April show zero projected promotions. The FY 2025 AR lists have cleared.)

What can block your promotion

Even if your number comes up, two things can stop it cold.

Short contract. You need an Expiration of Active Service or Reserve Expiration of Current Contract dated 31 January 2028 or later. If you don't have that, you cannot be promoted.

Incomplete obligated service or PME. If you're not in compliance when your seniority number is reached, your date of rank gets pushed to the first of the following month after you fix it.

Yes, a single month's delay matters for pay and future promotion timing.

Projections are estimates. The MARADMIN says so explicitly. In some cases, an additional contract extension may be required even after you thought everything was squared away.

Why this is a big deal

The Reserve promotion system runs on seniority numbers, not calendar dates.

Your "selection" puts you on a list. Your actual promotion happens when the Corps works down to your number, and only if you're administratively ready when they get there.

Most delays are preventable. Most surprises are not actually surprises. They're paperwork problems that went unnoticed.

This MARADMIN gives you the current position of that line, so you can see roughly when your number might come up and make sure you're ready before it does.

A smaller note for active-duty Marines

This MARADMIN explicitly states it applies to the Marine Corps Reserve only.

Active Reserve (AR) FY 2025 lists have cleared. AR FY 2026 April projections show zero planned promotions across all SNCO grades.

Active component Marines: this one isn't yours.

The bottom line

February Reserve SNCO promotions are authorized starting 1 February 2026.

Your commander promotes you. Not HQMC. Not the list by itself.

If your contract is short or your PME is incomplete, your date of rank gets delayed until you fix it.

What to do with this

If you're on the FY 2025 SMCR or IRR promotion list:

  1. Find your seniority number. Your S-1 or career planner can pull it.
  2. Check your contract end date. You need it running through at least 31 January 2028.
  3. Confirm your PME is complete and sequenced correctly for your grade.
  4. If anything is out of order, fix it before your number comes up. Not after.

If you think your number should have come up already:

✦ Contact your unit S-1 first. ✦ If it's a Reserve allocation question specifically, contact RAP-2 directly: MSgt Joel Austin, joel.austin@usmc.mil, (703) 784-9879.

If you want to see full monthly requirements (PME, OBS, commander certifications):

✦ Go to manpower.marines.mil ✦ Navigate: Divisions, Manpower Management, Performance Branch, Promotion Section, Enlisted Promotions, SNCOs, Monthly Promotion Requirements.

If you have general SNCO promotion list questions:

✦ Maj William Griffin: william.c.griffin@usmc.mil, DSN 278-3440 ✦ MSgt Dathan Mills: dathan.mills@usmc.mil, DSN 278-2765

This is written by a reservist, for reservists. It is not an official publication of HQMC or MARFORRES. Always verify guidance with your command or unit S-1 before acting on any article or summary.
